» New targets for vascular normalization therapy
By Jennifer Davis | Published 09/16/2008 | Research | Unrated

Chemotherapy drugs often never reach the tumors they're intended to treat, and radiation therapy is not always effective, because the blood vessels feeding the tumors are abnormal—"leaky and twisty" in the words of the late Judah Folkman, MD, founder of the Vascular Biology program at Children's Hospital Boston.
» Synthetic Molecules that can fight breast and prostate cancer cells
By Jennifer Davis | Published 09/3/2008 | All Cancers | Unrated

Seeking to improve on nature, scientists used a spice-based compound as a starting point and developed synthetic molecules that, in lab settings, are able to kill cancer cells and stop the cells from spreading.

» Multiple factors influence the effects of estradiol on the brain
By Jennifer Davis | Published 08/23/2008 | Research | Unrated

University of Illinois researchers report this week that chronic exposure to estradiol, the main estrogen in the body, diminishes some cognitive functions. Rats exposed to a steady dose of estradiol were impaired on tasks involving working memory and response inhibition, the researchers found.
» Algal toxin commonly inhaled in sea spray attacks and damages DNA
By Jennifer Davis | Published 08/23/2008 | Research | Unrated

NOAA scientists reported in the current issue of the journal Environmental Health Perspectives that an algal toxin commonly inhaled in sea spray, attacks and damages DNA in the lungs of laboratory rats. The findings document how the body's way of disposing the toxin inadvertently converts it to a molecule that damages DNA. Human inhalation of brevetoxins produced by the red tide organism, Karenia brevis, is an increasing public health concern.

» Synthetic Chemical Found in Cocoa accelerates destruction of human tumors
By Jennifer Davis | Published 08/10/2008 | All Cancers | Unrated

A synthetic chemical based on a compound found in cocoa beans slowed growth and accelerated destruction of human tumors in laboratory studies, and should be tested further for cancer chemoprevention or even treatment, say researchers at Georgetown University Medical Center.
» Novel mechanism to explain the early loss of brain cells in Alzheimer's disease
By Jennifer Davis | Published 07/31/2008 | Brain Cancer | Unrated

Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) neuroscientists at UQ have discovered a new way to reduce neuronal loss in the brain of a person with Alzheimer's disease.
» Panel of proteins linked to early development of pancreatic cancer Identified
By Jennifer Davis | Published 07/30/2008 | Pancreatic Cancer | Unrated

A multicenter team of researchers has identified a panel of proteins linked to early development of pancreatic cancer in mice that applies also to early stages of the disease in humans -- a breakthrough that brings scientists a significant step closer to developing a blood test to detect the disease early, when cure rates are highest.
» The "feel good" Hormones in The Brain Can Protect Against Cancer
By Jennifer Davis | Published 07/17/2008 | Research | Unrated

Scientists have been aware for many years that if cancer patients are not able to deal with the stress associated with being sick, the cancer will progress faster than in calmer patients. To counteract this phenomenon, physicians encourage treatments that help cancer patients handle their stress. Scientists theorized that the stress relief may have come as a result of increased beta-endorphin peptide (BEP), the "feel good" hormones in the brain that are released during exercise, a good conversation, and many other aspects of life that give humans pleasure.
