Tests on Breast Reduction Tissues May Detect Cancer

For those women who desire to reduce the size of their breast, there is a new advantage in favor of the surgery. If the tissues and fats coming from the breast reduction surgery would undergo some tests, the cancer development may be found in its early stages.

These findings were released in October in Seattle during the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) Plastic Surgery 2009 conference.

The research studies two hundred two females. Malign cells or their pre-formation tissue were discovered in 12.4% of the studied women. The age of the patients was in a strong relationship with the negative cancer diagnosis. As the study recorded, the women who were either 40 years of age or older and presented cancer cells summed up 6.2%. 7.9% of the patients who were 50 years of age or older presented cancerous cells in their breasts. An interesting fact is that none of the mammograms which were done prior to the reduction surgery did not show any of cancers.

The investigators recommend testing the tissues and fats coming from patients who underwent breast reduction surgeries in order to discover the cancer risk. The researchers suggest these tests should be done expressly on women who are older than 40 years.

As the American Society of Plastic Surgeons state, almost 90,000 females underwent breast reduction surgery during the year 2008. This figure represents an increase of 5% compared to the reduction surgery cases reported in 2000.
